How to simplify your life in 7 steps

Life can be joyfully simple. But simple doesn't mean easier. It's incredibly difficult to achieve simplicity, and consequently, peace of mind. The reason is that we have a tendency to overcomplicate everything. We are usually surrounded by some kind of drama, be it our own or from someone else. Or we tend to follow the most complicated route to do something or we try to do many things at the same time as a way to show that we are capable of it.

Simplifying doesn't mean being lazy, unproductive or not caring about your appearance. Learning to simplify means prioritizing what is really important, doing less more efficiently, and having only those things that bring value to your life, home, personal style, work and relationships. This is the best choice that you can make if you want to achieve great things in your life while keeping your peace of mind, instead of stress and headache.

If you have been feeling overwhelmed by our current fast-paced world, don't lose hope. There are subtle changes that you can make that will bring more peace into your life. So here are 7 simple steps to help you simplify:

1 - Focus on one thing at a time and learn to prioritize

The first thing you have to do to simplify your life is learning how to focus. I get you, we have so many things to constant worry about. Our schedule is usually so busy that while we are doing something, we're also thinking and getting distracted with all the other things that we need/want to do, but we end up doing almost nothing properly. It's essential to let go of everything that you might possibly want/need, to give total focus on one important thing at that moment.

Set a time for it, put your mobile on silent or do not disturb option, and do it with complete focus, until the time finishes and you can focus on your next task. This is also true for events, meetings and parties you want or need to go. Only go to the ones you really can go and learn to say no when you have to. By making a list of your priorities, you'll be able to simplify your life by eliminating what is not so important at that time.

2 - Don't waste your time with negativity

It's totally fine to have a negative reaction towards something, like feeling sad, angry, disappointed, frustrated and so on. It's part of our human nature and a way to cope with the situation. However, we should try to recognize why we are feeling that way, even cry and scream if you want to at that moment, but don't ever waste your whole day thinking about that, not even a whole morning.

Try to use your energy towards something that really matters instead, something that will have a good impact on your life. Sometimes finding the positive in bad situations is hard, but if you refocus your energy towards something good instead of dwelling on your problems, it will make your life so much easier and peaceful.

3 - Spend less time on social media

Social media is great to stay in touch with family, friends, connect with like-minded people, advertise your business, share your thoughts and even for doing research. But it can also be wasting precious time of your day, where you could be doing something more productive. Spending too much time on social media can even lead to negative thoughts, like comparing yourself to others, trying to keep up with all the trends out there, and more.

If you find that you are spending too much time on social media and that it's negatively impacting you, try taking a break from it. It can be a day, a week or even a month (if you're not a business, of course). The world won't end, and people won't forget about you either. You can also block or stop following the accounts that make you feel bad about yourself and your life or that makes you feel envious. Another way that can help you on not wasting your time is to set up time blocks where you can access your accounts during the day. This tip is also valuable for checking and answering your emails.

4 - Get rid of unnecessary stuff 

Decluttering your life is a great way to simplify it and can lead to many benefits, such as:

  • Saving money.
  • Having less clutter and beautifully clean home. It will be like your own sanctuary or spa, where you can relax easily.
  • Having fewer clothes, but the exact amount that fit your needs and looks great on you.  
  • Spending less time on maintenance and repairs.
  • Spending less time cleaning. 

And so on... But I would like to add a note. Be mindful when getting rid of the things you don't want anymore. Think about the planet. Don't only throw away your stuff adding more clutter to the world, as it is our home too, and our only home. We don't have other planets to go, at least not now. Try to find ways like donation or selling to people who will make good use of that stuff, and try to find places that do recycling as well. I know, it's a bit of a hassle, but it will also make us a more conscious consumer in our future purchases. And after some time those small changes will make your life so much easier. 

5 - Address your debt 

When thinking about all the mental clutter we have, debt can be a huge contributor to that. It can cause an insane amount of stress, and eliminating your debt is one of the most significant ways to simplify your life. Paying off your debt can help simplify your budget, allow you to think more clearly about your long term financial goals and more. Be more mindful about your expenses and try your best to live within your means and spend less than what you earn. Simplifying your life will also help you in not having debts and consequently, you will get peace of mind. 

6 - Add reminders to your phone's calendar

Creating a reminder can be a tremendous help. Use technology in your favour. This makes managing life easier because you don’t have to worry about forgetting things, missing payments, etc. Create reminders for things such as business tasks and to-do lists, payments, medications, birthdays, or anything else you need to be reminded of. It will free your mind to focus on more important tasks.

7 - Slow down 

Instead of trying to be the winner of the rat race, why don't you choose to slow down and live a much healthier and fulfilling life instead? Trying to accomplish everything on your to-do list (or more than you possibly can), being everywhere, helping everyone and keeping up with the Joneses isn't good for your physical and mental health and even for your soul, because the constant need for more will always make you feel empty inside.

Practice mindfulness. It's ok to plan about the future and remember good moments from your past, but don't forget to live your life in the present moment instead of only daydreaming about the future or rushing through life from one obligation to another. Pay attention to what is around you and to what you have already accomplished. Life passes quickly and you will regret if you don't enjoy your life a bit. Save some time to do the things you always wanted to do and spend some quality time with the people who matter for you the most. Those moments are precious. 

It's all about living a simple but meaningful life. 

By simplifying, you can learn how to be happier, be in more control of your life, waste less of your valuable time, and much more. All of this will allow you to appreciate life even more!

Simple living is different for each person. So take from this list only what you think will help you. Think about what is really important to you and what things you can do that can simplify your life and your problems and work towards that. Get rid of any mental or physical clutter so that you can have more time for the things that actually matter in your life.
