7 Reasons To Take Up Yoga

7 Reasons To Take Up Yoga / Blog Simplicity in Vogue - yoga benefits, wellness, wellbeing, lifestyle, yoga for health, body and mind

Yoga has its origins from deep within Indian culture, dating back to around 5000 years ago and it's about bringing harmony to the mind and body. People have been practising yoga as part of their daily lives for thousands of years across ages and cultures. In more modern times, the teachings of yoga have been spread internationally and it has become a global force. Adepts of yoga swear by its benefits on their overall wellbeing, so could this be an activity for everyone? Is yoga something that we should all be practising? Is yoga something that you have tried before, or perhaps it’s something that you have been meaning to try for ages yet have never quite got around to? If it is the latter, today I am going to be sharing 7 reasons to take up yoga, so perhaps it will give you the nudge to finally give it a go.

1. Your Physical Health

Yoga can be practised by absolutely anyone of any age, ability and physical fitness level. This in itself makes it appealing as it is open to everyone. For those who do practice yoga regularly, they cite long lists of benefits to their physical health. To name but a few, they talk about weight loss, increased flexibility, better posture, improved muscle tone and strength, increased energy levels, lowered blood pressure and better breathing. The list does go on and there are scientific studies being conducted regularly to fully define all of the health benefits that yoga can bring to your health. Yoga is exercise and no matter how gentle it might sometimes feel, those muscles are being stretched, that core is being strengthened and you will certainly feel better for it.

2. Your Mental Health

Yoga is as much about the mind as it is about the body. Meditation is threaded all of the way through it, and as such, it can be helpful in dealing with anxiety, it raises happiness levels and it improves mindfulness. These are significant claims and significant gains. Poses allow you to take the time to focus wholly on that moment that you are in and you are encouraged to do so throughout every yoga session. Yoga has also been linked to aiding a good night’s sleep and to improving memory function, so that session you completed that morning continues to help you night and day.

3. The Accessibility

Yoga is for everyone, regardless of religion, gender, age, fitness or ability, making it appealingly accessible. There are a variety of yoga styles practised and a huge variance in levels of difficulty, so you can make a start at whatever point suits you best. It is also currently very popular so there are resources wherever you look aimed at helping you to get started. There are online guides to getting started like yoga for beginners and YouTube has plenty of yoga lessons that are free to use. If you’re unsure which way to go at the beginning, I would highly recommend starting with the popular Yoga with Adriene channel and taking her beginners courses. She is simply amazing! And the great news is that you can do it from the comfort of your home, at any time you want. Before you know it, you will feel like a yoga pro!

4. The Equipment

Yoga clothing and accessories is a booming growth industry. There are huge arrays of yoga clothing and accessories, such as yoga bracelets, readily available. This is great news if you fancy completely immersing yourself in your new hobby and getting yourself some lovely new kit. On the other side, yoga is one of those activities that you can do without any special clothing at all, just dress in loose and comfortable clothes and you will be absolutely fine and all set to go. A mat is useful to have, but again, you can start off borrowing mats provided if you’re attending a class or just using your floor or a soft blanket if you are starting this at home.

I would also like to add that you don't need to compromise your religion and beliefs while practising yoga because anyone can reap its benefits, irrespective of one's faith, ethnicity or culture. Yoga does not adhere to any particular religion or community and it's approached as a way to find inner wellbeing. It's great therapy and exercise for your health and fitness. You can take from it only what you think is best for you.

5. The Connection

Just as this one applies to yoga, it does apply to most activities. Taking up something new is an opportunity for you to connect with others. A class might spark a new friendship, a shared interest might get you chatting online with others. It might just be that sense of kinship that you are practising something that so many others do. Connecting with others is very powerful and is proven to be essential to our wellbeing.

6. It’s Enduring

How many physical activities can you name that you can take up as a child and continue all the way through to your nonagenarian self? Very few springs to mind, yet yoga does fit that bill perfectly. This is a passion that you can begin easily and develop at your own pace, dipping in and out of it as life suits you. You can continue to practice this, keeping you fit and healthy, all of the way through life. It is also one that you can take up with your entire family, so pop that YouTube channel on, grab the kids and get going together.

7. It’s Me Time

Yoga is ‘me time’. Yoga is that activity where you can focus on being you and taking a break from all other stresses and tasks around you. Yoga is that moment in time where you can just be. A yoga class, whether in the community or online in the comfort of your own living room, is time out devoted completely to you. Yoga is about improving yourself, body and mind, whilst also fully accepting your present self. Yoga is the ultimate 'me time', giving you all of this and taking up as much or as little time as you have available to devote to yourself that day or that week. It should feel grounding and you should feel better after each session. As with anything else, the more that you can find the time for it, the more you will feel the rewards.
