Crafting Your Own Signature Style

Most of us have found ourselves in the awkward situation of wearing the same outfit as someone else at some point or another. This is a generally unpleasant experience, as you immediately start comparing yourself to the other person and can feel like a carbon copy or as though you lack individuality. But not to worry. This can be avoided by taking a few steps to create your own signature style. Here are just a few to take into consideration!

Independent Boutiques

Sure, it may be simple to head straight to the high street or shopping centres every time you need a new item of clothing or a new outfit. It’s extremely convenient and you’re bound to find something that you like amongst the wide variety of shops. But this convenience comes at a higher price. First of all, everyone else is thinking in the same way.

High street and shopping centres items are usually mass produced to cater to a lot of people and a lot of people are going to pick up exactly the same item that you do. Second, as a mass produced item, it is usually made in third world countries in a horrible working environment, and that is why these pieces are usually so cheap. Of course, these workers need the money, but at least we should help and fight for their rights so they can earn what they deserve.

If you want to stand out, you’re going to have to start considering options from independent boutiques and designers. These stores tend to have a more limited run of each item and when a line is gone, it’s generally gone. You will also be valuing the work of these designers and boutiques and helping them survive amongst the big department stores. There are brick and mortar boutiques as well as online boutiques. You should visit this website to get started.

Upcycling

While you may not have heard of upcycling before, it might be something that could significantly benefit your wardrobe. This is a simple process where you transform the items that you already have in your closet. Examples of upcycling could include turning full-length jeans into a pair of cropped jeans or shorts, adding pins and patches to a jacket, transforming pillowcases into a beach tote bag, or a whole host of other activities. This is a simple way to make a mainstream item more personal to you.

Make Your Own

Sure, the thought of creating your own clothing may seem daunting at first. You probably wouldn’t know where to start. But if you attend a few sewing classes or follow a few online tutorials, you will be making simple items in next to no time. This gives you complete control over the items that you make, including the materials they are made from, the colours, the patterns, the cut, and the fit. If you have a real skill and flair for this, it could even prove to open a new career path for you and you could progress to actually make your own brand or clothing line!
